Strengthening Community Support in Newcastle’s West End

The Harrison Foundation visited Cornerstone Benwell this week to see first-hand the impact of last year’s donation and to meet with the team delivering vital support in one of Newcastle’s most deprived communities.

Based in the West End, Cornerstone Benwell has been supporting local residents since 1987. The area it serves consistently ranks among the most deprived in the country, with high levels of poverty and financial hardship. Each week, around 150 people access the centre’s services, taking part in a wide range of programmes designed to support wellbeing, build confidence and provide practical help where it is most needed.

The Harrison Foundation’s donation last year supported the continuation and expansion of Cornerstone’s core services. During this week’s visit, it was clear that the Foundation’s support is making a real difference across several areas of the charity’s work.

A central part of Cornerstone’s offer is the Corner Kitchen, a community café providing free or low-cost meals and also acting as a welcoming space for people who may otherwise experience isolation. Alongside this, the Benwell Bridge Community Pantry supports around 65 households each week, offering affordable access to food in a way that maintains dignity and choice.

The Corner Shop provides low-cost clothing and household items, while the Benwell Bubble offers free laundry services to families facing financial pressure. These practical interventions ensure that individuals and families can meet basic needs, helping to improve day-to-day living conditions.

Beyond immediate support, Cornerstone delivers a range of programmes focused on longer-term development. The Welcome Project supports adults with learning disabilities through creative and practical sessions, while the Sturdy Foundations programme provides hands-on construction and DIY training, helping participants build confidence, develop practical skills and improve employability. The Harrison Foundation’s donation last year was used specifically to enhance the Sturdy Foundation’s programme, enabling Cornerstone to purchase a wide range of new DIY equipment.

The centre also offers targeted support for those at risk of isolation, including the Cornerstone Memory Café for individuals living with dementia and their carers. These sessions provide a safe and supportive environment, helping to improve quality of life and reduce loneliness.

In recognition of its work, Cornerstone Benwell was named North East Small Charity of the Year in 2025, reflecting the scale of its impact and the strength of its community-led approach.

Daniel Harrison MBE, trustee of the Harrison Foundation, said:

“Cornerstone Benwell is delivering essential support in a community where the need is clear and ongoing. It was good to visit and see how the funding is being used across a wide range of services including skills development. The team has created a welcoming environment that supports both immediate needs and longer-term progress. It’s clear how much Amy’s and the team’s work is valued by the local community.”
