Riding High at Stanley Brae Following Harrison Foundation Investment
Visitors to Stanley Brae Riding School in County Durham are already benefiting from new equestrian facilities funded by the Harrison Foundation, with early signs showing a clear impact on engagement and learning.
Following a donation by the Harrison Foundation in December last year, trustee Daniel Harrison MBE visited the stables to see first-hand how the funds have been used and the difference they are making.
The funding enabled Stanley Brae to invest in a range of new equipment designed to improve accessibility and strengthen its ability to deliver practical, skills-based learning for those with additional needs. This included new mounting blocks, additional saddles and specialist equipment to support both riders and horses.
For many riders, simply getting onto a horse can be one of the biggest barriers. The introduction of new mounting options has made this process safer and more accessible, allowing the school to better support individuals with different physical needs.
Alongside improving access for riders, the investment has also supported the purchase of therapy equipment to maintain the health and wellbeing of the horses, which are central to delivering the programme.
The addition of new saddles has also been an important step. Many participants experience sensory sensitivities, and having consistent, adjustable equipment allows the school to provide a more comfortable and supportive experience for riders.
The new equipment has improved how sessions are delivered, allowing participants to take part in more structured and purposeful activity. This has been particularly important for those who respond better to practical learning, where they can develop skills through direct experience rather than traditional classroom approaches.
During the visit, Daniel saw how the facilities are now being used on a daily basis to provide young people with opportunities to engage in activities, build responsibility and develop skills that can support their progression beyond school.
Daniel Harrison MBE said: “It’s clear that having the right equipment in place can make a real difference to how young people engage with their learning. What we’ve seen at Stanley Brae is a practical example of how investment can support pupils, creating a better environment for learning and development.”
