Meeting the Next Generation of Learners at the Harrison Centre Newcastle

Harrison Foundation trustee Daniel Harrison recently visited the Year 2 learners at the Harrison Centre for Social Mobility in Newcastle, based within Newcastle United Foundation’s flagship community hub, NUCASTLE. The visit was an opportunity to meet the students currently taking part in the Harrison Centre’s employability and personal development programmes, to hear about their experiences first-hand and to see how the Centre’s work continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people across the region.

Daniel was welcomed by course tutor Keith and a group of learners, who shared their progress and talked about what the programme means to them. Daniel joined the students for an esports session, where learners put their teamwork and communication skills to the test in a fast-paced digital challenge. The activity highlighted one of the many ways the Centre uses hands-on learning to build confidence and skills that prepare young people for future education, training or employment.

Afterwards, Daniel took part in an informal Q&A session with the students, answering their questions about leadership, skills and his journey in business as a founder and former CEO of Newcastle fintech business, True Potential.

The conversation ranged from career advice to life lessons, with Daniel emphasising the importance of self-belief, hard work and the power of a positive attitude. The learners shared how the Harrison Centre has helped them grow in confidence, develop new skills and set personal goals for the future.

Speaking after the visit, Daniel Harrison MBE said:

“It’s always inspiring to spend time with the young people at the Harrison Centre. They’re full of energy, ideas and ambition and that’s exactly what this place is all about. The Centre provides a space where everyone is given the opportunity to learn, grow and believe in themselves. Seeing the impact first hand always reminds me why this partnership continues to be so important because it’s helping people build their own futures.”

The Harrison Centre for Social Mobility was established in 2021 in partnership with Newcastle United Foundation as part of the redevelopment of the NUCASTLE building. The Centre provides education, skills training and employment support for young people aged 16 to 24. Through small-group learning, guidance and real-world projects, it helps participants build confidence, gain qualifications and take positive next steps into work or further education.

Since opening, the Harrison Centre has supported hundreds of young people across Newcastle and the wider region. In the past year alone, more than 250 learners have completed accredited training, with over 70% progressing into employment, apprenticeships, or further study.
