Harrison Foundation celebrates official renaming of Potters sports grounds in Antigua and Barbuda
The Harrison Foundation is celebrating a significant milestone in its work in Antigua and Barbuda, following the official renaming of the Potters sports grounds in recognition of the Harrison family’s longstanding commitment to creating opportunities through sport, education and community development.
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has formally renamed the facility the Harrison Potters Sports Centre: A Centre of Sporting Excellence, honouring the contributions of Sir David Harrison, Lady Sylvia Harrison and their family to the country’s development.
The announcement was made on 5 November 2026 during the closing stages of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that was held in Antigua and Barbuda, attended by Commonwealth heads of governments and officially opened by His Majesty King Charles III. It marks an important step towards completing the transformation of Potters Playing Fields into a modern, multi-purpose sporting and community facility.
Supported by a multimillion-dollar investment from the Harrison Foundation, the development will provide opportunities for young people to participate in sport, develop their talents and benefit from improved recreational facilities.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne welcomed the milestone, describing the project as part of the country’s national renaissance during its 45th anniversary of Independence.
“What is happening here in Potters is a renaissance that will create new opportunities for athletes, students and entrepreneurs, while strengthening community pride and identity.
“The Harrison family’s multimillion-dollar investment is an exceptional act of generosity and nation building. On behalf of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, I thank Sir David, Lady Sylvia and their family for helping us create a legacy that will serve generations.”
The development includes upgraded cricket and football facilities, basketball, netball and volleyball courts, and a dedicated baseball facility that will provide a home for Little League baseball.
A major addition will be the Lady Sylvia Harrison Aquatic Centre, which will feature a 50-metre Olympic-sized swimming pool, instructional and warm-down pools, and seating for 750 spectators.
These facilities will improve access to swimming lessons while strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s ability to host national and regional competitions.
Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, highlighted the importance of collaboration in bringing the project forward.
“The Harrison Potters Sports Centre is the result of a shared belief in the ability of young people and communities to thrive when they are given the right facilities and opportunities. It is a partnership rooted in friendship, trust and a commitment to Antigua and Barbuda. I wish to thank the Government of Antigua and Barbuda for its partnership and support, and I am deeply grateful to Sir David, Lady Sylvia and the Harrison family for embracing this vision and helping to turn it into a lasting national asset.”
Once completed, the centre will benefit students attending the Harrison Centre Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education, Sir Novelle Richards Academy and Potters Primary School. It will also support community activities, employment, small businesses and closer connections between local communities.
Sir David Harrison underlined his family’s commitment to the project and its long-term benefits.
“Our family is honoured to support a project that places young people, sporting opportunity and community life at its heart. We hope the Harrison Potters Sports Centre will become a place where talent is discovered, confidence is built and people from every background come together. We look forward to seeing it serve Potters, Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean for many years to come.”
Daniel Harrison MBE, trustee of the Harrison Foundation, added: “This is a proud moment for our family and the Harrison Foundation, and a reflection of what can be achieved through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to the community. We are delighted to see the progress being made at Potters and look forward to the opportunities these facilities will create for young people and families across Antigua and Barbuda for generations to come.”
The completed facility is expected to officially open during the first quarter of 2027.
