Celebrating Progress at George Stephenson High School
This week, Harrison Foundation trustee Daniel Harrison MBE visited George Stephenson High School in Killingworth, one of six schools currently taking part in our growing partnership with the Newcastle United Foundation. With over 1,500 pupils, the school plays a central role in its community and shares our commitment to giving every student the opportunity to reach their potential.
The visit focused on the work taking place in the school’s joint Harrison Foundation and Newcastle United Foundation classroom, a dedicated space created to support pupils who may benefit from smaller group work, personal development sessions or alternative learning approaches. The classroom is part of a wider three-year partnership that aims to support pupils across six secondary schools in the region, through guidance, targeted learning and access to life skills development.
Since the launch of the programme in September 2024, more than 945 pupils have already taken part across the six schools, exceeding our initial target of 900. Of those, 380 students have special educational needs or disabilities and 502 girls have taken part, also exceeding initial projections. The programme has also encouraged community engagement, with 474 pupils involved in social action projects. So far, 163 King’s Trust Achieve qualifications have been awarded, alongside 21 Sports Leaders certificates. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 93% of pupils saying they feel more inspired and engaged, and 90% reporting increased self-confidence.
During the visit, Daniel joined a group of Year 7 pupils for a practical lesson themed around bridge building and problem solving. The session challenged students to work collaboratively, testing their creativity and perseverance as they experimented with materials and ideas.
Speaking after the session, Daniel said: “It’s brilliant to see young people working together, thinking creatively, and enjoying learning. These sessions help build more than knowledge, they build confidence, teamwork and resilience. We want to support environments where students aren’t just taught, but encouraged to think and grow.”
During the visit, Daniel presented Year 7 student Billie with the Learner of the Month award. Billie was nominated for her outstanding effort and determination, as well as her positive attitude and encouragement of others in the classroom.
The Harrison Foundation is proud to support this work. We’re grateful to the staff, students and the Newcastle United Foundation for their continued dedication to this partnership. We look forward to continuing to support this work in the months ahead.
